Luang Prabang Glows for One Night Each Year at the Festival of Light
September 07, 2026
Once a year, on the October full moon, Luang Prabang transforms into a city of candlelight for Boun Lai Heua Fai, the Festival of Light. On October 26, 2026, illuminated boats made from bamboo and paper will wind through the UNESCO-listed old town to the sound of drums before being released onto the Mekong River. Temple grounds glow with lotus-shaped lanterns, while thousands of small krathong drift downstream carrying wishes into the current, marking the end of Buddhist Lent.
For travelers who want to experience the festival from a more intimate base, La Résidence Phou Vao, a Luxury Collection Resort & Spa, has created a Festival of Light Offer built around the celebration. A dedicated Guest Experience Curator can arrange guided access to the parade, lanterns and river, while the package includes daily breakfast, airport or railway transfers, old-town shuttle service, a $50 resort credit, daily sunset drinks and canapés, complimentary laundry and, for stays of three nights or more, a three-course dinner for two. The offer is available for bookings through October 31, 2026, with rates available upon request.
The Curated Take: Some cultural celebrations are best experienced as an event; others are best understood as a moment in the life of a place. Boun Lai Heua Fai is the latter. The combination of Buddhist tradition, candlelit temples, handmade lanterns and the Mekong at night offers a rare glimpse of Luang Prabang when its famously tranquil atmosphere takes on an entirely different rhythm. For travelers drawn to meaningful cultural experiences, timing a visit around the October full moon turns a stay in Luang Prabang into something considerably more memorable than a sightseeing stop.
