At Patina Maldives, Fari Islands, art is taking a decidedly underwater direction. Through September 12, 2026, the resort is hosting designer and artist Sean Wotherspoon for a collaboration spanning fashion, vintage design and marine conservation, culminating in Respect the Reef, a large-scale ceramic fish sculpture created with resort guests and now submerged in the lagoon as part of Patina’s ongoing coral restoration efforts.

The project brings Wotherspoon’s signature use of color into Patina’s existing ceramic coral workshops. Guests created and glazed individual ceramic scales, which were assembled onto a sculptural fish rather than the geometric structures traditionally used in the resort’s reef program. The completed work has now been placed underwater, where coral can attach and grow across its surface. Above water, Wotherspoon’s creative influence continues through an exclusive capsule collection of original artworks, vintage finds and reworked one-of-one pieces, including Hawaiian shirts and Carhartt shorts, displayed at the Fari Art Atelier.

The Curated Take

The most interesting luxury souvenirs are often the ones that don’t come home with you. At Patina Maldives, guests contribute to something that will remain long after their departure, watching a colorful piece of collaborative art gradually become part of the marine environment. It’s a particularly compelling expression of experiential luxury: the memory is personal, but the creation ultimately belongs to the reef.
