Perth’s Kings Park Gets Its First Drone Show With Moortabiny
September 21, 2026
Perth’s iconic Kings Park/Kaarta Koomba will become the setting for its first-ever drone show this October, with Moortabiny, meaning “Becoming Family” in Noongar, combining hundreds of points of light with storytelling and an original soundscape. Created by award-winning author Kim Scott, the experience draws inspiration from Western Australia’s landscapes, native flora and the changing rhythms of the natural world.
Taking place October 2–4 as the finale of the Everlasting Kings Park Festival and the Western Australian Botanic Garden’s 60th anniversary celebrations, the production is designed to connect technology with culture and place. The night-sky spectacle will use the park’s natural setting as a backdrop while exploring themes of family, landscape and connection.
The Curated Take:
Moortabiny is interesting precisely because it doesn’t treat technology and nature as opposites. The drone show becomes a contemporary canvas for stories rooted in Noongar culture and the Western Australian landscape, creating a nighttime experience that is distinctly tied to Perth rather than simply another light spectacle.
