Dahlonega Turns Into a Christmas Town
October 04, 2026
In Georgia’s North Georgia mountains, Dahlonega has plenty of reasons to visit year-round, from its gold-rush history and wine country to its position near the southern end of the Appalachian Trail. But from the day after Thanksgiving through early January, the historic town takes on an entirely different character as it transforms into one of the South’s most festive Christmas destinations.
The month-long Old Fashioned Christmas celebration centers on Dahlonega’s historic downtown square, where thousands gather for the lighting of the town’s Christmas tree before the surrounding streets and storefronts begin to glow with holiday lights and decorations. Horse-drawn carriage rides, strolling carolers, visits with Santa and a hometown Christmas parade add to the traditional atmosphere, while the Holly Theater brings seasonal productions to the stage. Visitors can also attend holiday tea at Waffles English Tea Room, browse a Festival of Trees decorated by local businesses, shop the annual Christmas Market on Candy Cane Lane or experience a live nativity. The town’s cinematic holiday setting has even attracted Hallmark and Lifetime productions.
The Curated Take: Dahlonega’s appeal in winter comes from how completely the town embraces the season. This isn’t simply a destination with a few holiday events layered onto a normal itinerary. The historic square, mountain setting and locally rooted traditions become part of the experience, creating the kind of small-town Christmas atmosphere that feels increasingly rare.
