Capella Sydney has once again earned a place among the world’s leading hotels, ranking No. 16 in The World’s 50 Best Hotels 2026 and receiving the designation of Best Hotel in Oceania. The recognition comes less than four years after the property opened in 2023, bringing international attention to a hotel whose identity is closely tied to one of Sydney’s most significant heritage buildings.

Set within the restored former Department of Education building in Sydney’s Sandstone Precinct, the 192-room Capella combines the structure’s original architecture with contemporary interiors and a collection of more than 1,400 artworks. Its spaces extend from Auriga Spa and a 20-metre heated pool to Brasserie 1930, McRae Bar and Aperture, creating a hotel experience that is as much about culture and design as it is about accommodation. Its location also places guests within easy reach of Sydney Harbour, the Opera House and Harbour Bridge.

The 2026 recognition was determined by votes from more than 800 members of The 50 Best Hotels Academy, a group comprising hoteliers, travel journalists, educators and experienced luxury travelers. Capella Sydney was also named No. 12 and Best Hotel in Oceania in the 2025 ranking.

The Curated Take: Capella Sydney demonstrates how heritage can become an active part of a contemporary hotel rather than simply a backdrop. The restoration gives the property an architectural connection to Sydney, while its art, dining and wellness spaces create additional ways for guests to engage with the city. For travelers drawn to hotels with a strong sense of place, that combination is arguably more interesting than the ranking itself.
