Southern Ocean Lodge Joins MICHELIN’s Highest-Rated Wilderness Hotels
October 11, 2026
Southern Ocean Lodge on Kangaroo Island has been elevated to Three MICHELIN Keys, the guide’s highest hotel distinction, as eight properties across the Beckons luxury lodge portfolio receive recognition in the 2026 MICHELIN Key Hotels selection. Perched on the cliffs of South Australia’s Kangaroo Island, Southern Ocean Lodge was recognized for its modern architecture, remote setting and access to wildlife and nature experiences. It is one of only 18 hotels worldwide to receive its first Three Keys in 2026, placing it among a particularly small group of properties recognized for an extraordinary stay.
The broader Beckons portfolio demonstrates how MICHELIN’s hotel recognition is increasingly reaching properties where the surrounding landscape is central to the experience. Clayoquot Wilderness Lodge in Canada and Tierra Patagonia in Chile retained Three Keys, while Longitude 131°, Capella Lodge, Silky Oaks Lodge, Huka Lodge and Tierra Atacama received Two Keys. Across destinations ranging from the Australian outback and tropical rainforest to the Andes and New Zealand’s Waikato River, the properties share an emphasis on small-scale hospitality, local knowledge and experiences shaped by their environments.
The Curated Take: The most revealing part of the Beckons recognition is its geographic consistency. These aren’t interchangeable luxury lodges with a shared design template. Their settings dictate what the experience becomes, whether that means wildlife on Kangaroo Island, the desert around Uluṟu or the wilderness of Torres del Paine. Southern Ocean Lodge’s move to Three Keys underscores a broader shift in luxury travel toward properties where architecture, hospitality and access to the natural world are inseparable from the destination itself.
