The Red Centre Turns Art Into a Way of Experiencing Country
October 13, 2026
Central Australia’s Red Centre has been named among Lonely Planet’s World’s Top 25 Experiences Hotlist for 2027, with its immersive art experiences earning the region a place on the global list. The recognition highlights a creative landscape that extends well beyond traditional galleries, from Aboriginal art centres and contemporary artists to outdoor painting and large-scale installations across the desert. In Alice Springs, Parrtjima transforms Mparntwe through light, art and storytelling, while Iltja Ntjarra (Many Hands) Art Centre offers visitors the opportunity to see Western Arrernte artists working in the tradition of Albert Namatjira.
Further into the Red Centre, art becomes inseparable from the landscape itself. Wintjiri Wiru uses drones, light and sound to share Anangu stories against the backdrop of Uluru, while Sunrise Journeys projects art and stories across the desert at dawn. Bruce Munro’s Field of Light at Uluru and Light Towers at Kings Canyon create another interpretation of the desert after dark, while Art Tours of Australia leads small-group watercolour sessions in the Tjoritja (West MacDonnell Ranges). Together, these experiences offer travelers different ways to encounter Central Australia’s creativity while gaining a deeper understanding of Country, culture and the region’s Traditional Custodians.
The Curated Take: What makes the Red Centre particularly compelling is that art is not confined to a designated cultural stop. It can emerge from an artist working in an art centre, a story carried through light and sound, or the act of sitting outdoors and painting the landscape itself. That makes art a pathway into understanding place, rather than simply another attraction to add to an itinerary.
